Peer Educators
Friends is giving great emphasis to Peer Education within all its programs.
All children receive basic training. Among these children, the ones who are the most interested are asked to participate in further training. The best and most dedicated ones are selected and given a specific peer education training.
Peer Educators then work in groups around a theme and a media they have chosen and develop some education material for their peers (theater, puppet shows, newsletters, games, dance shows, posters, photo-stories, photographs, etc.).
The Peer Educators then go on to give education, using their material, to street children in the streets, in squatter communities, in the Mith Samlanh / Friends' center and in other NGOs' centers.
The best Peer Educators can later become Trainees and work with the Mith Samlanh / Friends' teams and eventually become full-time staff.
Mith Samlanh / Friends is currently working with 55 in-center Peer Educators divided into specialised topics like HIV/AIDS, drugs, reproductive health, hygiene or nutrition. There are currently 7 Peer Educators who have become Trainees and 6 Trainees who have become full-time staff.
